We, Ronald McDonald M\u0101ja Latvi\u0101, run the “Children’s Health Bus” programme, bringing medical specialists directly to children in Latvia’s regions – so that families don’t have to travel a long way into the city just to get an answer to one important question: “What is really going on with my child?” <\/span><\/p>\n

The bus is staffed by specialists from the Children’s Clinical University Hospital (BKUS) and other medical institutions. We provide consultations across a range of fields – ophthalmologist (eye doctor), ENT\/otolaryngologist, neurologist, allergist, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, dermatologist, paediatric surgeon\/orthopaedist, optometrist, physical and rehabilitation medicine specialist, speech therapist, and others – and every trip is planned around the needs of the children. <\/span><\/p>\n

Our consultations for children and teenagers up to 18 years of age are free of charge, and no referral from a family doctor is required. However, booking in advance is essential. To make the visit as useful as possible, we ask that you bring the child’s identity document showing their personal identity number and, if possible, any previous medical records. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

What is the \"Children's Health Bus\"?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The “Children’s Health Bus” is a mobile medical consultation programme that travels out to Latvia’s regions, providing children with free specialist appointments closer to home. Our goal is to reduce the barriers to healthcare, namely the travel, the time, the queues and the stress that often keep families from seeking help in good time. <\/span><\/p>\n

Our programme is tailored to the needs of each region. This means that in one location there may be greater demand for an eye doctor and optometrist, while in another the need may be for a gastroenterologist, neurologist or allergist. <\/span><\/p>\n

Our specialists:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • assess the child’s health situation,<\/span><\/li>\n
  • carry out examinations,<\/span><\/li>\n
  • establish new diagnoses or clarify existing ones,<\/span><\/li>\n
  • provide recommendations and a plan for next steps,<\/span><\/li>\n
  • and, if necessary, arrange referral for further examinations at BKUS. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    How booking and the visit work<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    We very much want every child to have enough time and attention during their visit, which is why the “Children’s Health Bus” works by appointment only. In the regions, appointments are usually arranged by our coordinators: family doctors, preschool and school nurses, staff from local authorities and social services, and representatives of our partner organisations. <\/span><\/p>\n

    In practice, it works like this:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Step one: we notice the need. Parents (or a teacher\/nurse) notice signs suggesting that it would be worthwhile for the child to see a specialist. <\/span><\/li>\n
    • Step two: we get in touch with the coordinator. The coordinator helps work out which specialist is the most suitable and arranges a time for the visit. <\/span><\/li>\n
    • Step three: we prepare for the visit. We bring the documents with us, write down our questions, and get the child ready. <\/span><\/li>\n
    • Step four: the visit on the bus. Two medical specialists usually travel out on each trip. The working day often starts at 10:00, and one specialist can typically see up to 20 children, spending around 15 to 20 minutes with each one. (This may vary slightly on any given trip.) <\/span><\/li>\n
    • Step five: a clear plan. After the consultation, the family receives recommendations: what to do next, what to watch for, which examinations or specialists are needed, and how urgent it is. <\/span><\/li>\n
    • Step six: referrals. If further examinations are needed, our specialists can refer the child for various tests. The family doctor and the local team then help coordinate the process that follows, so that the child doesn’t fall “between systems”. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Important to know: the Bus is not an emergency service. If a child has acute, dangerous symptoms (for example, severe trauma, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, or sudden very severe pain), you must act immediately and seek emergency care. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

        Sometimes parents ask: “Do we really need a specialist? Maybe it will pass.” We understand: everyday life is busy, children grow and change, and sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s normal and what’s a warning sign. <\/span><\/p>

        On one of our trips, a primary-school-aged child was brought to us who was often described at school as “restless” and “disruptive”. Particular difficulties arose in situations that required concentrating on the board for long periods, copying out text or reading. At such moments, the child would quickly lose patience, become restless, interrupt others and avoid doing the tasks. <\/span><\/p>

        After a calm conversation with the doctor and an assessment of the child’s vision, it became clear that there were vision difficulties. Once the family received a clear action plan and vision correction was sorted out, the tension eased. It became easier for the child to keep up in lessons, and the behavioural problems decreased significantly. <\/span><\/p>

          • he child often asks you to repeat things, hears but doesn’t understand;<\/span><\/li>
          • frequent ear, nose or throat complaints, snoring, breathing through the mouth;<\/span><\/li>

            Breathing and allergies:<\/span><\/p>

            • frequent coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath during exertion;<\/span><\/li>

                      • any previous examinations, discharge summaries, test results and doctors’ reports (if you have them);<\/span><\/li>
                      • a list of the child’s medications and dietary supplements (names and doses);<\/span><\/li>
                      • a short written description of the situation: when it started, how often it happens, and what makes it worse or better;<\/span><\/li>
                      • 3 to 5 questions you definitely want to ask the doctor.”<\/span><\/li><\/ul>

                        • if you’re seeing an eye doctor or optometrist: the child’s glasses (if they have any), any previous glasses prescription, and information about past eye tests;<\/span><\/li>
                        • if you’re seeing an otolaryngologist (ENT): information about frequent ear, nose or throat episodes and any medications used;<\/li>
                        • if you’re seeing an allergist or pulmonologist: notes on the symptoms (when and where they occur, and what makes them worse); a short diary can be helpful;<\/span><\/li>
