From January through June, the Ronald McDonald Māja Latvijā program, “Children’s Care Mobile,” continued its work in Latvia’s regions, helping children receive the necessary health care closer to home.
During its first six months, the Children’s Care Mobile made 56 trips to 40 locations across Latvia, providing 2,538 free specialist consultations to 2,018 children. These results confirm that access to specialists in rural areas remains essential for many children and their families.
During this half-year, children had access to consultations with specialists in various fields, including an ophthalmologist, a pediatric neurologist, a pediatric allergist, an optometrist, a physical therapist, a pediatric endocrinologist, a pediatric gastroenterologist, a pediatric surgeon/orthopedist, a dermatologist, and an ENT specialist. The most consultations in the first half of the year were provided by the optometrist, pediatric neurologist, and pediatric allergist, who were also among the most sought-after specialists in the Children’s Care Mobile this year.
Support for vision care is particularly important. From January through June, 162 pairs of glasses were prescribed for children, helping to address vision problems promptly- problems that affect a child’s daily life, education, and development.
The busiest month in the first half of the year was May, when 470 consultations were provided and 11 field visits were conducted. Similarly, in the other months, the Children’s Care Mobile regularly travelled to regions across Latvia so that families with children could receive specialist care closer to home.
In addition, during this half-year, support was provided to Ukrainian children in Latvia, with 20 counseling sessions offered to 12 children.
The Children’s Care Mobile is able to operate thanks to a team of doctors, our partners, local governments, donors, and supporters, who help make healthcare more accessible to children throughout Latvia.
